Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has released updated electronic clinical quality measure (eCQM) specifications and implementation resources for the 2027 reporting and performance period across hospital inpatient, hospital outpatient, and eligible clinician quality reporting programs. The annual updates are designed to keep measures aligned with current clinical guidelines, coding standards, and healthcare reporting requirements.
The updated resources include revised eCQM specifications, implementation guidance, technical release notes, telehealth guidance, and measure reference tables available through the Electronic Clinical Quality Improvement (eCQI) Resource Center. CMS also announced that the eCQM Data Element Repository will receive additional updates in June to reflect new data element changes.
In addition, the 2027 value sets and direct reference codes are now available through the National Library of Medicine’s Value Set Authority Center (VSAC), giving healthcare organizations and vendors access to the terminology and coding resources needed for measure implementation and validation.
CMS also shared information on several candidate eCQMs and hybrid measures currently under consideration for future reporting programs. These measures are still pending rulemaking and are not yet finalized for mandatory reporting, but they offer providers an early look at potential future quality reporting requirements.
