CMS Updates Practices on MIPS, MVPs and Upcoming QPP Changes

CMS is asking MIPS-reporting practices to complete a voluntary survey about their experience with MIPS Value Pathways (MVPs), whether they reported an MVP for 2025, are preparing for 2026, or have not yet adopted an MVP. The survey takes about 15 minutes, and eligible clinicians may receive Improvement Activity credit for participating.

CMS also expects to release 2025 MIPS final scores by late September 2026, followed by the Targeted Review period for practices that believe their scores need to be reviewed. Practices should confirm their MIPS eligibility and review the available scoring resources now so they are prepared when final scores are released.

CMS is also proposing significant changes to the Quality Payment Program for 2027, including phasing out traditional MIPS after the 2028 performance year, introducing three new MVPs focused on diabetes, hypertension and hospitalists, and modifying the existing MVPs. The proposed rule also includes changes to quality and Promoting Interoperability reporting requirements and several requests for feedback on the future of digital quality reporting and MVP scoring.

Important deadline: Practices interested in commenting on the CY 2027 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Proposed Rule must submit comments by September 14, 2026, using file code CMS-1848-P.
