RSV Admissions Remain Low but Are Starting to Rise: 4 Key Respiratory Virus Updates

Hospitals are beginning to see a gradual uptick in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) admissions, although national numbers remain limited due to delayed federal reporting. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital is among those noting earlier-than-usual activity, with Hamilton County recording 32 RSV admissions in the week ending Nov. 15 — slightly up from 28 the week prior. National CDC estimates, last updated Oct. 25, show RSV hospitalizations remain low at 0.2 per 100,000 people, but are trending upward.

Here are three additional virus developments clinicians should be aware of:

  1. Flu activity is still low but increasing nationwide. As of Nov. 11, flu cases were rising or likely rising in 39 states. COVID-19 infections were also trending upward in 20 states.
  2. Flu-related emergency visits are climbing in children. The CDC’s latest FluView report, updated Nov. 14, shows pediatric ED visits for flu symptoms continue to rise.
  3. The U.S. measles outbreak continues to expand. As of Nov. 12, 1,723 cases have been confirmed across 43 states. Experts warn the trend could threaten the nation’s measles-elimination status and strain hospitals, especially with a potentially severe flu season ahead.
