Healthcare organizations across the country are closing departments or discontinuing services as they respond to financial pressures, staffing challenges and changes in patient demand. Becker’s recently highlighted dozens of hospital service changes, including several affecting labor and delivery and pediatric care:
- Bethesda Hospital in Florida: Baptist Health plans to discontinue pediatric rehabilitation services at three locations beginning August 21, including Bethesda Hospital East, Baptist Health City and its Wellington office.
- USA Health’s Providence Hospital in Mobile: The hospital plans to close its labor and delivery unit following the planned closure of Mobile OB-GYN, which has provided much of the hospital’s obstetric care.
- Sweetwater Hospital in Tennessee: The hospital closed its labor and delivery department in February, citing challenges with specialty provider coverage, declining patient volumes, reimbursement pressures and rising operating costs.
These changes reflect broader challenges hospitals are facing as they balance financial sustainability, workforce availability and demand for healthcare services.
