Major CPT Changes Coming to Maternity Care in 2027
Beginning January 1, 2027, significant changes to CPT maternity care coding will change how obstetric services are reported. The long-standing global maternity care model is being replaced with more detailed reporting by antepartum care, labor management, delivery and postpartum care.
What’s Changing?
- 17 existing codes will be deleted, including several global maternity and postpartum codes.
- 12 new codes will be introduced, including a new category for labor management.
- 6 codes will be revised to better reflect current maternity care.
- Prenatal and postpartum services will generally be reported using appropriate E/M codes rather than bundled maternity codes.
- New labor management codes will allow providers to report care based on the day of service and complexity.
- Delivery services will be reported using more specific codes for vaginal delivery, VBAC and cesarean delivery.
What Practices Should Do Now
The changes will require practices to take a closer look at their documentation, coding, charge capture and revenue cycle processes before 2027. Practices should review their current workflows, update EHR templates and billing systems, train providers and coding staff, and work with payers to understand how the new codes will be handled.
