CMS Updates: 2026 MIPS Registration and QPP Exception Applications

2026 MIPS MVP Registration Open Through November 30 CMS Updates: 2026 MIPS Registration and QPP Exception Applications

CMS has opened the 2026 Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) Value Pathway (MVP) registration period for individual clinicians, groups, subgroups, and Alternative Payment Model (APM) Entities. Registration or changes to an existing registration must be completed by November 30, 2026, at 8 p.m. ET through the Quality Payment Program (QPP) website. Practices should review their reporting options, as participants registered for an MVP may also submit traditional MIPS data, with CMS using the higher-scoring submission when both are reported. Group registration requirements have also changed for 2026, requiring practices to identify their specialty composition during registration. A HARP account and QPP Security Official role are required to complete the process.

2026 Quality Payment Program Exception Applications Available

CMS is accepting 2026 Quality Payment Program (QPP) exception applications through December 31, 2026, at 8 p.m. ET. Eligible clinicians, groups, and virtual groups may request an exception from MIPS Promoting Interoperability reporting due to circumstances such as insufficient internet access, decertified EHR technology, vendor issues, or other qualifying hardships. A separate Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances application is available for situations such as natural disasters, practice closures, and public health emergencies that prevent data collection or submission. Approved applications may allow participants to be exempted from reporting one or more MIPS performance categories. Applications are submitted through the QPP website using a HARP account.
