CMS Updates Demographic Data Refresh Schedule and Medicare Claims Lookback Period

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has implemented changes designed to improve the accuracy and availability of clinician information within the Quality Payment Program (QPP).

More Frequent Demographic Data Updates

Beginning in April 2026, CMS increased the refresh frequency for Doctors and Clinicians demographic data from every two months to monthly updates. This change allows provider profile information to be updated more regularly, helping ensure that publicly available clinician data remains current and accurate.

For practices and providers, more frequent updates may help reduce delays between submitting information changes and seeing those updates reflected within CMS systems.

Extended Medicare Claims Lookback Period

Effective May 14, 2026, CMS expanded the Medicare Part A and Part B claims lookback period from six months to twelve months.

This update gives clinicians additional time for Medicare claims to be submitted and processed before their profile pages are affected by inactivity. By extending the review period, CMS aims to reduce situations where clinician profile pages expire due to temporary gaps in Medicare billing activity.

While these changes do not require immediate action from most providers, they may improve the accuracy of clinician profile information and help maintain active listings within CMS reporting systems. Organizations should continue to monitor provider data for accuracy and ensure Medicare claims are submitted in a timely manner.

Healthcare organizations that participate in QPP reporting may wish to review the updated guidance and understand how these changes could affect provider profiles and public reporting information.
