Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program Launches July 1: What Practices and Patients Should Know

Beginning July 1, Medicare beneficiaries may see significant savings on certain GLP-1 medications through the new Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program. The initiative was established through agreements with major drug manufacturers and is designed to improve access to popular weight management and diabetes medications while reducing out-of-pocket costs for eligible patients.

Several large pharmacy providers are preparing to support the program. CVS Health announced expanded patient services that include lower copay options for qualifying Medicare beneficiaries, virtual weight management visits through MinuteClinic, pharmacist support, and educational resources to help patients manage treatment-related side effects. Walmart and Sam’s Club are also introducing tools and pharmacy-based guidance to help patients understand their coverage options and navigate the new program.

The program arrives as healthcare organizations continue to address challenges associated with long-term GLP-1 therapy. Studies have shown that many patients discontinue treatment within the first year due to factors such as medication costs, side effects, and treatment concerns. The added support services from participating pharmacies are intended to help improve medication adherence and patient outcomes.

Practices that care for patients using GLP-1 medications should familiarize themselves with the upcoming program and be prepared to answer questions regarding eligibility, coverage, and available support resources. Patients interested in learning more should review information from CMS, participating pharmacies, and their healthcare providers to determine whether they qualify for the new savings opportunities.
