Medicare Highlights Resources to Support Opioid Use Disorder Treatment

CMS is encouraging healthcare providers to review available Medicare services that support patients receiving treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). The reminder follows findings from a recent Office of Inspector General report that highlighted the benefits of medication-assisted treatment, particularly the use of buprenorphine.

According to the report, buprenorphine can help reduce opioid use and lower the risk of overdose, contributing to improved patient outcomes and long-term recovery success. As opioid-related health concerns continue to affect communities nationwide, access to ongoing treatment and support services remains an important component of patient care.

Medicare Part B covers a variety of services designed to help eligible beneficiaries continue OUD treatment for as long as medically necessary. These services may include treatment provided through Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs), counseling, and other supportive care options.

Practices that treat patients with opioid use disorder may benefit from reviewing current Medicare coverage requirements and available resources to ensure patients receive appropriate access to care and treatment continuity.
