Promoting Interoperability

In April 2018, CMS released the new name for its Medicare EHR Incentive Program as “Promoting Interoperability” (PI). According to CMS, “To continue our commitment to promoting and prioritizing interoperability of health care data, CMS renamed the EHR Incentive Programs to the Promoting Interoperability Programs in April 2018. This change will move the programs beyond the existing requirements of meaningful use to a new phase of EHR measurement with an increased focus on interoperability and improving patient access to health information.” As with Meaningful Use, the goal is to stimulate and encourage the use of Certified EHR Technology (CEHRT) and to have those technologies interoperate with each other to improve the quality of care for the patient by giving their provider a more complete picture of their patient’s health. The latter has been the hurdle that CMS has been trying to jump with technology vendors who are unwilling to integrate and work together. It doesn’t have to be that way though, Nick Casarona, Integration Specialist at MediSYS says, “There should be few limitations as to the information clinics can share among collaborative partners.”  For over 30 years, MediSYS has been a leader in interoperability and has worked with hundreds of outside companies to bring all of the patient’s information together to provide a clearer picture of the patient’s health.
