Rural Health Transformation Program Funds Technology, Access and Workforce Initiatives

States are beginning to direct portions of their Rural Health Transformation Program awards toward specific initiatives designed to strengthen rural healthcare. Recent announcements include funding for health IT modernization, cybersecurity, telehealth, workforce development, emergency and maternal care, specialty services, and expanded access to care.

The initiatives are part of the $50 billion Rural Health Transformation Program approved for all 50 states in December 2025, rather than additional funding. Recent allocations include $144 million for Alabama to support mental health, substance abuse, emergency and maternal care, as well as technology and cybersecurity improvements. Other states are directing funds toward areas such as telehealth and remote patient monitoring, health IT and interoperability, medical transportation, pharmacy connectivity, surgical technology, and healthcare workforce training.

These investments highlight the continued focus on modernizing rural healthcare infrastructure while expanding access and strengthening the rural workforce. Individual state announcements provide more information about how the funding will be used and which programs and communities are expected to benefit.
