2019 Promoting Interoperability Hardship Exception Now Available

2019 MIPS Promoting Interoperability Hardship Exception Applications are Now Available

CMS is now accepting hardship exception applications for the Promoting Interoperability (PI) category for the 2019 MIPS performance period. The following exceptions are available:

  • Small practice
  • De-certified EHR technology
  • Insufficient Internet connectivity
  • Extreme and uncontrollable circumstances such as disaster, practice closure, severe financial distress, or vendor issues
  • Lack of control over the availability of certified EHR (CEHRT)

If your application is approved, your PI score would be reweighted to zero and the 25 points reallocated to the Quality category.

There is a separate application for those impacted by “extreme and uncontrollable circumstances.” This application allows you to request an exception to reweight the Quality, Cost, or Improvement Activities components of MIPS.

Both the PI Hardship Exception and the Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances Exception applications must be submitted by December 31, 2019.

Visit the CMS QPP Website for more information and links to both applications.
