Quest Diagnostics Restores System Following Cybersecurity Incident Involving Patient Records

Quest Diagnostics has restored its Quanum Lab Services Manager (LSM) system following an October 21 cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to certain patient records. The company announced October 26 that it had remediated the incident and securely restored the affected platform, which healthcare providers use to order laboratory tests and access results.

Two additional systems, Essential Insights and LabHQ, were temporarily paused as a precaution and have also been restored. Quest reported that no data was accessed through those systems. Its core business operations were not disrupted, and providers using direct laboratory information system (LIS) interfaces or electronic medical records (EMRs) to order tests were not affected.

  • Patient information involved: Quest confirmed that personal information and patient records were affected, but has not disclosed the specific information accessed.
  • Investigation ongoing: The company is continuing to determine the full scope of the incident.
  • Notifications planned: Quest will notify affected patients and healthcare providers once they are identified and will report the incident to relevant regulatory authorities.
  • Number of affected patients unknown: Quest has not yet released the total number of patient records involved or identified the affected states and provider organizations.

Although the affected systems are back online, the investigation remains ongoing. Healthcare organizations that use Quest services should monitor for additional updates and remain alert to potential patient privacy and cybersecurity concerns.
