The CDC’s latest Antimicrobial Resistance Threats Report estimates that drug-resistant bacteria and fungi cause approximately 9.7 million infections and 50,800 deaths in the United States each year. More than 42,000 deaths were associated with infections commonly acquired in hospitals, costing the U.S. healthcare system more than $12 billion.
The report highlights antimicrobial resistance as an ongoing threat to patient safety and modern healthcare. While the estimates are higher than those in the CDC’s 2019 report, the agency cautions that changes in data sources and methodology mean the two reports cannot be directly compared. The latest findings are based on data collected in 2023.
