Mid-Week MACRA Minute – Advancing Care Information

Helping you put the MIPS pieces together each week!

MIPS Performance Categories: Advancing Care Information

Advancing Care Information replaces the Medicare EHR Incentive Program also known as Meaningful Use.

In 2017, you have the option of  2 measure sets. The option you choose is based on your electronic health record edition:

  • Advancing Care Information Objectives and Measures
  • 2017 Advancing Care Information Transition Objectives and Measures

This post will focus on the 2017 Advancing Care Information Transition Objective and Measures.

Advancing Care Information (ACI) is 25% of your 2017 MIPS Performance score!

Based on the ‘pace’ you choose in our previous post, you will select the appropriate number of measures for this category that you choose to report on in order to meet the requirements.

The ACI category is broken down into BASE measures, PERFORMANCE measures, and BONUS points.

The ACI category also requires the use of Certified EHR Technology!

In order to achieve the BASE score for this category, eligible clinicians (ECs) will need to meet all requirements for the BASE measures that are listed below. ECs must submit a “yes” for the security risk analysis measure, and at least a 1 in the numerator for the numerator/denominator of the remaining measures.

  • Security Risk Analysis
  • Electronic Prescribing
  • Patient Electronic Access: Provide Patient Access
  • Health Information Exchange

The PERFORMANCE score is calculated by using the numerators and denominators submitted for measures included in the performance score, or for one measure, by the yes or no answer submitted. NOTE: the first 2 list below are 2 of the BASE measures which ECs can receive credit for both the performance and base scores:

  • Patient Electronic Access: Provide Patient Access (ALSO A BASE MEASURE)
  • Health Information Exchange (ALSO A BASE MEASURE)
  • Patient Electronic Access: View, Download, or Transmit (VDT)
  • Patient Specific Education
  • Secure Messaging
  • Medication Reconciliation
  • Immunization Registry Reporting

The BONUS points can be earned by:

  • Reporting “yes” to 1 or more additional public health and clinical data registries beyond the Immunization Registry Reporting measure will result in a 5% bonus:
    • Syndromic Surveillance Reporting
    • Specialized Registry Reporting
  • Reporting “yes” to the completion of at least 1 of the specified Improvement Activities using CEHRT will result in a 10% bonus.
