Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) of Alabama is piloting an Electronic Health Record (EHR) Clinical Messaging and ePrescribing Program with Surescripts through the Alabama-based EHR vendor, MediSYS EHR – MedConnect v2.3.
The EHR Clinical Messaging Program delivers STARs-related, patient-specific messages to providers at the point of care. The goals of the program that went live in December 2015 are as follows:
- Deliver patient-specific messages/alerts to providers in near real time, while providers are seeing the patient
- Use consistent electronic formats and workflow integration to identify and address gaps in care in a timely manner
- Determine what percentage of messages result in improved clinical outcome as defined in STARs ratings for Medication Adherence and High Risk Medications (HRMs)
- Receive feedback from prescribers about the messages at the time the message is read
The ePrescribing Program focuses on the component of the EHR that enables you to make a medication selection, and access the patient’s medication history and patient’s prescription insurance coverage (i.e., formulary, copayment, coverage information). This proactive approach helps prescribe alternative medications which will reduce first fills for high-risk medications and move STARs maintenance drugs from a 30-day prescription to a 90-day prescription.
Jimmy Chapman, President and CEO of MedConnect, had this to say about the pilot program: “Participating in the pilot program has been a good partnership for both Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama and MedConnect, MediSYS EHR. We hope to see that delivering this information at the point of care within the EHR will increase physician efficiency while improving the quality of care for the patient.”
